North Kerala: Malabar Kitchens & Coast

A 9-day North Kerala journey through Kozhikode, Thalassery and Bekal, centred on Malabar food, coastal heritage and longer stays.

Kozhikode → Thalassery → Bekal → Mangaluru

Use this route as a starting point. We can add a night where you want to linger, introduce a special interest or adjust the hotels to suit your style.

There is another Kerala beyond the familiar Kochi–Munnar–backwaters circuit. This northbound journey follows the Malabar coast through Kozhikode, Thalassery and Bekal, using three bases to keep the pace settled. Regional cooking and the history of coastal exchange shape the experience, with time for markets, sea air and local encounters. It is especially appealing if you have visited southern Kerala before, or prefer to explore one part of a state in more detail.

What makes this route different

  • Begin with two nights in Kozhikode and a guided introduction to Malabar's food and trading history.
  • Spend three nights around Thalassery, with room for craft and heritage outings in the wider Kannur area.
  • Finish with three nights near Bekal, combining its coastal fort with quieter time by the sea.

Your 8-night stay plan

  • Kozhikode2 nights
  • Thalassery area3 nights
  • Bekal3 nights

Pace and practicalities

A coastal road journey with longer stays and optional outings. Markets and historic sites may have uneven surfaces, and fort visits involve walking in exposed areas. Food experiences are selected around your preferences and dietary requirements. Any Theyyam visit is dependent on a real local ritual calendar and community arrangements.

Your day-by-day journey

DAY 01

Arrive in Kozhikode

Arrive in Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, and transfer to your hotel for two nights. Keep the first day gentle. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a short coastal outing or simply settle in over dinner. Dietary preferences can be discussed before travel so that food-focused experiences are planned thoughtfully.

Overnight: Kozhikode

DAY 02

Kozhikode's trading streets and food

Explore selected neighbourhoods with a guide, using the city's trading history as a thread through streets, markets and coastal life. A food-focused outing can introduce regional dishes at venues chosen for your interests. This is a considered tasting plan rather than an expectation to try everything, with a break built into the day.

Overnight: Kozhikode

DAY 03

Kozhikode to Thalassery

Travel north to the Thalassery area and check into your next three-night base. Take a short orientation around your accommodation or the town if timing suits. The afternoon remains flexible, giving you space to enjoy the setting and learn how the coming heritage and food experiences will be arranged.

Overnight: Thalassery area

DAY 04

Thalassery's heritage and kitchens

Explore a selection of local heritage sites and streets with a guide, then focus on the region's food traditions through a prearranged meal or cooking experience if available. The host and menu are confirmed separately. Leave time for conversation and rest instead of treating a local home as a quick sightseeing stop.

Overnight: Thalassery area

DAY 05

Kannur-area craft and local life

Choose an outing in the wider Kannur area, potentially including a working handloom or another craft encounter where visitors are welcomed. Visits depend on working schedules and permission. If an appropriate Theyyam ritual is confirmed for your dates, the programme may be adapted, with clear guidance on conduct, timing and photography.

Overnight: Thalassery area

DAY 06

Along the Malabar coast to Bekal

Continue north to your coastal base near Bekal for three nights. Build in suitable stops and settle in without an ambitious sightseeing programme. The next stage provides a quieter finish, so take the afternoon to enjoy your accommodation and the coast when the weather and local conditions allow.

Overnight: Bekal

DAY 07

Bekal Fort and the coast

Visit Bekal Fort with time to appreciate its coastal position and explore a manageable part of the site. Paths can be exposed and uneven, so choose the timing and walking distance carefully. Return for an easy afternoon, with additional local visits optional rather than automatically filling the day.

Overnight: Bekal

DAY 08

A final day without a hotel move

Enjoy a free day near Bekal, or request a short local outing suited to your interests. Use the breathing space for a favourite meal, a quieter walk or time at your hotel. Swimming is not assumed as part of the plan; local sea conditions and advice determine what is suitable.

Overnight: Bekal

DAY 09

Transfer to Mangaluru and depart

Travel to Mangaluru for your onward flight, with the timing confirmed against your booking and road conditions. An early service may require a different final-night arrangement. If you would like to continue into Karnataka, we can design an extension with the additional driving and nights clearly set out.

Departure day

The sequence is a suggested plan. Flights, permits, opening days, weather and local conditions may require adjustments; your final itinerary will confirm arrangements.

Choosing your stays

Combine a comfortable Kozhikode hotel, a characterful stay in the Thalassery area and a coastal property near Bekal. Smaller local stays differ in facilities and meal arrangements, so we match them to your comfort requirements. No named property or hosted meal is treated as confirmed until checked for your dates.

Questions about this journey

Is Theyyam guaranteed on this itinerary?

No. Theyyam is a living ritual tied to particular shrines, communities and dates. We only propose a visit when a local event and appropriate visitor arrangements are confirmed; it is not a performance available on demand.

Is this a food tour with a fixed menu?

Food is a central interest, but menus and hosts are arranged individually. Tell us about vegetarian preferences, allergies and other requirements before we propose a hosted meal or cooking session.

Can we combine North Kerala with Kochi?

Yes, with extra travel time and nights. This outline starts in Kozhikode and finishes via Mangaluru to follow a northbound route. Adding Kochi works better as a deliberate extension than a hurried detour.

A different pace? A favourite hotel?

Tell us what you would change. These journeys are designed to be adapted to your interests, time and style.
