Kerala Without Hurry

An 8-day private Kerala journey without the hill drives: two nights in Kochi, three beside the Kumarakom backwaters and two on the Marari coast.

Kochi → Kumarakom → Marari → Kochi

Use this route as a starting point. We can add a night where you want to linger, introduce a special interest or adjust the hotels to suit your style.

Kerala does not have to mean a different hotel every night. This route stays on the coastal side of the state, bringing together harbour history, backwater life and an unhurried beach finish. It suits travellers who would rather spend an afternoon by the water than use every spare hour for another transfer. Munnar and the mountain roads are left for a separate journey.

What makes this route different

  • Explore Fort Kochi and Mattancherry in short guided outings, with café breaks and time for your own discoveries.
  • Use Kumarakom as a three-night base, choosing a daytime cruise while keeping the same hotel room.
  • Finish with two nights near Marari, where organised activities are optional rather than filling every day.

Your 7-night stay plan

  • Kochi2 nights
  • Kumarakom3 nights
  • Marari2 nights

Pace and practicalities

An easier-paced route, with three hotel bases and no planned hill-station detour. Heritage streets can be uneven; boats may involve steps or a gap when boarding. Tell us about walking limits before we select rooms, boats and sightseeing. This outline does not imply step-free access.

Your day-by-day journey

DAY 01

Arrive in Kochi

Meet your driver and settle into your Kochi hotel for the first of two nights. Keep the arrival day light: a short waterfront stroll is an option if your flight timing and energy allow. We arrange the following day's visits around your interests rather than asking you to start sightseeing straight from the airport.

Overnight: Kochi

DAY 02

Fort Kochi and Mattancherry

Spend the cooler part of the day exploring harbour neighbourhoods with a local guide. Look at the changing streetscape, old trading connections and everyday waterfront life. Choose selected interiors according to opening days, then pause for lunch. The afternoon is deliberately free; a performance can be discussed separately if it appeals.

Overnight: Kochi

DAY 03

Kochi to Kumarakom

Travel inland to the edge of the backwaters and check into your lakeside base for three nights. Leave time to enjoy the setting rather than adding several visits to the transfer. Over dinner, discuss the next day's boat outing and the amount of time you would like to spend on the water.

Overnight: Kumarakom

DAY 04

A daytime backwater cruise

Take a prearranged daytime cruise, with the vessel and boarding arrangements selected for your party. Watch canalside homes, palms and working waterways unfold at a gentle pace. The route depends on the boat, water conditions and available time. Return to your hotel for the evening instead of moving onto a houseboat overnight.

Overnight: Kumarakom

DAY 05

A day to settle into Kerala

Keep this day flexible. A short village outing with a guide, a regional cooking session or simply a morning by the lake can each work well. Activities involving local hosts depend on availability and consent. Staying a third night gives you room to change the plan if the weather or your energy suggests it.

Overnight: Kumarakom

DAY 06

Kumarakom to Marari

Continue to the coast near Marari and settle into your final hotel. The remainder of the day is yours: read in the shade, enjoy the grounds or take a short beach walk when conditions are comfortable. Choose dinner at the hotel or ask us about a suitable local alternative.

Overnight: Marari

DAY 07

An unhurried day by the coast

Enjoy a day without a required excursion or early start. If you would like more context, arrange a short local outing around village life with your guide. Otherwise, let the beach and hotel be the destination. Swimming and boat activities are subject to local conditions and the advice available on the day.

Overnight: Marari

DAY 08

Return to Kochi and depart

Your private transfer returns you to Kochi airport with a buffer appropriate to your flight and expected road conditions. For an early departure, we may recommend spending the final night closer to the airport. The exact transfer schedule is confirmed with your booked accommodation and flights.

Departure day

The sequence is a suggested plan. Flights, permits, opening days, weather and local conditions may require adjustments; your final itinerary will confirm arrangements.

Choosing your stays

Choose a heritage or contemporary hotel in Kochi, a lakeside property in Kumarakom and a coastal resort near Marari. We discuss room access, distances within the property and restaurant arrangements alongside the atmosphere. A private day boat can replace an overnight houseboat; neither a particular boat nor hotel is reserved at this stage.

Questions about this journey

Does this Kerala itinerary include Munnar?

No. It focuses on Kochi, Kumarakom and Marari. This reduces the hill driving associated with a tea-country circuit. Munnar can be added with extra nights if the hills are important to you.

Must we sleep on a houseboat?

No. The suggested plan returns you to your Kumarakom hotel after a daytime cruise. An overnight houseboat is an optional change, subject to the vessel, cabin facilities and your preferences.

Can the beach days be extended?

Yes. Add nights at Marari or replace a sightseeing outing with time at your hotel. Sea conditions vary, so a beach stay does not guarantee swimming conditions.

A different pace? A favourite hotel?

Tell us what you would change. These journeys are designed to be adapted to your interests, time and style.
