Coromandel Coast & Pondicherry

Eight days along the Tamil coast, pairing Mahabalipuram's stone monuments with three nights in Pondicherry and a comfortable Chennai departure.

Chennai → Mahabalipuram → Pondicherry → Chennai

Use this route as a starting point. We can add a night where you want to linger, introduce a special interest or adjust the hotels to suit your style.

Follow the Coromandel Coast at a pace that leaves space between the major sights. Two nights at Mahabalipuram allow its carved stone landscape to be explored in separate outings. Three in Pondicherry open up more than the familiar seafront: Tamil streets, courtyards, food and contemporary creative life all deserve time. A final Chennai night protects the departure from an overambitious same-day drive.

What makes this route different

  • Explore Mahabalipuram's coastal monuments in manageable sessions rather than a single rushed stop.
  • Spend three nights in Pondicherry, looking beyond the promenade to its different neighbourhoods.
  • Keep an open day for personal interests, with Auroville only included when specifically arranged.

Pace and practicalities

A coastal road route with free afternoons and a return gateway night. Monuments, pavements and beach approaches can be uneven; heat and humidity affect how much walking feels comfortable. We can shorten walks, adjust start times and select hotels with easier room access.

Your day-by-day journey

DAY 01

Arrive in Chennai

Meet your driver and transfer to your hotel. Settle in after the flight and keep the first evening easy. If you arrive early and want an introduction to the city, we can arrange a short outing close to your hotel rather than cross the city repeatedly before you have rested.

Overnight: Chennai

DAY 02

Chennai to Mahabalipuram

Take a selected Chennai visit if timing suits, then travel along the coast to Mahabalipuram. Check into your two-night base and get a first impression of the town. The balance between city sightseeing and arrival time is tailored to you; there is no need to fill every available hour.

Overnight: Mahabalipuram

DAY 03

Mahabalipuram's sculpted stone

Explore a considered selection of the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas and the town's rock-cut monuments with a guide. Break up the visits and leave time for shade and refreshments. The sites are part of a wider landscape, so transport and walking are arranged around the areas you most want to see.

Overnight: Mahabalipuram

DAY 04

Along the coast to Pondicherry

Continue south to Pondicherry, also known as Puducherry, and settle into your hotel for three nights. Enjoy a short neighbourhood introduction or a seafront stroll when the weather is comfortable. Keep the evening open for a relaxed dinner, with recommendations suited to your dietary preferences and hotel location.

Overnight: Pondicherry

DAY 05

Pondicherry beyond the promenade

Explore the city's different neighbourhoods with a guide, considering Tamil and French influences through streets, buildings and everyday activity. Select a manageable walk rather than trying to cover everything on foot. A food-focused outing or a visit linked to local creative work can be requested, subject to the host's availability.

Overnight: Pondicherry

DAY 06

A day for your own interests

Spend the day at your own pace, revisiting a neighbourhood, lingering over lunch or enjoying your hotel. If Auroville interests you, discuss a separately arranged visit in advance. Access to particular spaces and activities varies, and the programme will make clear what has actually been confirmed.

Overnight: Pondicherry

DAY 07

Return to Chennai

Drive back to Chennai with a suitable break, then check into your final hotel. This overnight buffer avoids tying an international departure directly to the coastal transfer. If you want a fuller Chennai introduction, add another night; otherwise, enjoy a simple final evening and prepare for the onward journey.

Overnight: Chennai

DAY 08

Depart from Chennai

Your driver takes you to the airport at a time planned around your flight and the hotel location. The journey can also connect with another Indian region. We will discuss the actual connection before confirming the route, rather than assuming that every domestic or international flight fits the same schedule.

Departure day

The sequence is a suggested plan. Flights, permits, opening days, weather and local conditions may require adjustments; your final itinerary will confirm arrangements.

Choosing your stays

Choose a Chennai city hotel, a comfortable coastal base near Mahabalipuram and a characterful or contemporary stay in Pondicherry. In Pondicherry, discuss whether neighbourhood atmosphere or quieter surroundings matter more. The final Chennai hotel is chosen around your flight time and any remaining city plans.

Questions about this journey

Why spend three nights in Pondicherry?

Three nights provide two full days: one for a guided introduction and one for your own interests. It gives the town room to be more than an overnight stop between drives.

Is an Auroville visit included?

It is an optional addition. The type of visit and any advance arrangements must be confirmed. An outing to Auroville does not automatically include access inside the Matrimandir.

Can we fly out of Chennai on the last transfer day?

Possibly, with a suitably timed flight and a generous road buffer. The outline includes a Chennai night to make the departure less dependent on the long drive from Pondicherry.
