Tamil Nadu and Kerala in 15 Days: Temples, Hills and Waterways

Explore a 15-day Tamil Nadu and Kerala route with overnight stops, temple towns, Munnar and the backwaters, plus focused alternatives in the south.

Travel in Layers · Published 9 October 2026 · 4 minute read

Fifteen days can connect Tamil Nadu's coastal and temple towns with Kerala's tea country, backwaters and Kochi. It is a varied journey with several hotel changes, so the route needs a clear east-to-west sequence and honest time for driving. If you want longer stays and fewer transfers, choose a smaller part of the south or add nights.

Our South India: Temples, Tea & Waterways journey begins in Chennai and finishes in Kochi. It introduces different histories and landscapes without returning all the way to the starting point. Flight arrangements should support those separate gateways where practical.

Understand the sample overnight plan

DestinationNightsMain purpose
Chennai1Arrival and an initial coastal-city introduction
Mahabalipuram2Time for the monument landscape
Pondicherry1A short introduction to the town
Kumbakonam1A base within the temple region
Thanjavur, also called Tanjore2Architecture and time beyond the arrival day
Madurai2City and temple context
Munnar2Tea-country landscape after the cross-state journey
Alappuzha/backwaters1A selected waterside or boat experience
Kochi2Heritage and a final full day before departure

This totals 14 nights and 15 days. It also makes the pace visible: Pondicherry and Kumbakonam are brief stops. If either is a major interest, extend the stay or reduce another part of the route rather than expecting a one-night stop to provide several full experiences.

Give the Tamil coast its own character

Mahabalipuram is more than an overnight stop after Chennai. Its monument group includes different forms of carved and built architecture, recognised by UNESCO. A two-night stay allows you to separate the arrival from your main exploration and choose a comfortable time for exposed outdoor areas.

Pondicherry introduces a different urban setting and history. With one night, you need to prioritise a short introduction rather than assume there is time for every neighbourhood and an excursion to Auroville. If the coast is your main interest, Coromandel Coast & Pondicherry is an eight-day alternative with a much longer Pondicherry stay.

Connect the temple towns with context

Kumbakonam and Thanjavur provide a base for understanding the region's temple architecture. The Great Living Chola Temples recognised by UNESCO include the temples at Thanjavur, Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram. Visiting selected sites with a knowledgeable guide is more rewarding than repeatedly stopping without time to understand the differences.

These are places with living religious traditions as well as architectural interest. Access, dress, photography and worship schedules need to be respected. Do not assume that all visitors may enter every area. The day's programme should account for walking, standing, barefoot sections and opportunities to rest, rather than treating each temple as a quick roadside stop.

Choose whether to include Chettinad

Chettinad adds mansion architecture, regional kitchens and potential craft encounters, but it needs nights and appropriate arrangements. It is not included simply by passing through the wider region. If these interests matter more than crossing into Kerala, consider Chettinad & Chola Country, a nine-day route ending in Madurai.

You can also extend the broader 15-day circuit, but adding Chettinad without extra time means removing or shortening something else. Ask which trade-off is being made. A named place in the itinerary should correspond to meaningful time there, not only a drive through it.

Treat the move into Kerala as a travel day

The journey from Madurai towards Munnar involves a change of landscape and hill travel. Keep the arrival programme light and check the location of your hotel. A property distant from the visits you want can add further driving. Our Munnar pacing guide explains how to keep the stay manageable.

The following backwater chapter should specify whether you sleep aboard a houseboat or in a hotel. These are different experiences, with different luggage and boarding arrangements. See the day-cruise or overnight-houseboat comparison before deciding. The final Kochi nights provide a useful change from the transfer sequence.

When a different southern route is better

If ancient monuments are your main interest and you want to concentrate on one region, Hampi & the Chalukya Temples offers a separate Karnataka journey. It should be treated as another holiday or a substantial extension, not a convenient day trip from the Tamil Nadu–Kerala circuit.

Tell us whether you want breadth, temple history, regional food or a gentler pace. We will adapt South India: Temples, Tea & Waterways, with realistic overnight stops, current access arrangements and the transport connections checked for your dates.
