Pench, Kanha and Bandhavgarh can form a rewarding Central India wildlife journey, but you do not need all three to have a worthwhile safari holiday. Choose the combination that gives you enough time in each reserve, sensible transfers and a lodge you will enjoy between outings. Avoid selecting a route only because one park is described as best for tiger sightings.
Our Pench, Kanha & Bandhavgarh Safari Journey is a three-reserve starting point. It can be shortened to one or two parks, or extended with more nights in the places that fit your interests. The final plan depends on the actual gates, permits and connections available for your dates.
Why combine more than one reserve?
Different reserves give you a change of setting, guiding perspective and lodge experience. A second park can add variety for someone who enjoys the forest as a whole. It also introduces another transfer, checkout and check-in, which uses time that could otherwise be spent on safari or at the lodge.
The decision is therefore a balance. If you have only a few nights, one well-chosen reserve may be more satisfying. If wildlife is the centre of a longer holiday, two or three bases can work well. Allow the length of the trip to support the number of parks, rather than reducing every stay to make all the names fit.
Compare the route choices
| Combination | Why consider it? | Main planning question |
|---|---|---|
| Pench and Kanha | Two forest chapters without moving through all three reserves | Do the gateways and chosen lodge locations make the transfer sensible? |
| Kanha and Bandhavgarh | A focused two-reserve journey in Madhya Pradesh | Have you allowed a proper travel day and enough nights in each? |
| All three | Greater variety for a wildlife-led holiday | Does the trip have enough time for more than brief stays? |
| One reserve | Fewer hotel changes and more time to understand one landscape | Does the lodge, activity pattern and available permit mix suit you? |
This table compares itinerary patterns, not sighting probabilities. There is no guaranteed wildlife outcome for any combination.
Pench: be clear about which side and gate
Pench includes visitor arrangements in both Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. A booking described only as Pench leaves important questions unanswered. Your lodge, safari gate, permit authority and transfer plan should all refer to the same intended area, or explain clearly why a longer gate transfer is involved.
Ask how long you will travel from the lodge before the safari begins, and whether the return is included. A comfortable room can be a less convenient choice if the available permits use a distant gate. The correct arrangement is specific to your reservation; it cannot be decided simply from the park name on a brochure.
Kanha: give the stay room to develop
Kanha can suit a longer stay in which you have several outings and time at the lodge. Choose your accommodation alongside the actual safari access, rather than making the hotel decision first and hoping suitable permits remain. The official Kanha Tiger Reserve website is a primary source for reserve information.
If you are interested in birding, vegetation or photography as well as large mammals, explain that to your planner. It helps shape guiding expectations and how you use time outside the main safari sessions. Ask which activities are available and permitted at the selected lodge; they should not be assumed to be included merely because the hotel is near a forest.
Bandhavgarh: avoid a rushed final stop
Bandhavgarh is often included in dedicated wildlife routes. It deserves the same planning care as the first reserve rather than becoming a brief final addition. Check how your arrival fits the first booked session and how the departure fits your onward train or flight. A permit that depends on an optimistic transfer time is not a sound plan.
The reserve's safari-zone information is a useful official reference. The actual zone or gate in your booking should be confirmed individually. A preferred zone may not be available, and no zone should be sold as a guaranteed sighting location.
Compare safari inclusions consistently
For each reserve, ask how many sessions are included, whether the vehicle is private or shared, which permits are confirmed and how guiding is arranged. Then compare the lodge meal plan and gate transfers. Two similar total prices can represent very different amounts of time in the forest.
The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department portal provides official booking information for the relevant MP parks. Rules and access may differ by reserve, zone and date. We check the current arrangements before confirmation rather than treating a general seasonal statement as a guarantee that every area is open.
Choose the number of parks after the pace
Read our guide to safari drive numbers, then decide how many consecutive early starts you want. Protect transfer days and some lodge time. If you are planning a southern holiday instead, Karnataka: Coffee, Forest & Palace offers a different route with Kabini, rather than requiring a Central India detour.
Tell us your available nights, gateway preferences and wildlife interests. We will adapt the three-reserve safari journey into a route whose transfers, confirmed sessions and rest periods work together.
